Using what we learned this week about Value Studies, thumbnails and basic palette set up, we made our way to an cute little pioneer village made up of authentic homes from the 1800s. This place is run completely by volunteers and they were excited to have art students come in hopes that they’d be able to use digital versions of some of our artwork for their fliers. Talk about pressure- for most of us in the class this was our first watercolor ever! It was a good way to get me to work hard though- I just hope they’re not too disappointed!
To begin, I sketched a clean outline of the layout I created with my Value Study onto my watercolor block.
Next I did a wash over the whole painting using Horizon Blue, Hansa Yellow Medium, Pyrrol Orange and a touch of Quinacridone Burnt Orange.
When the first wash was completely dry I added some mid-tones. For this painting I mainly focused on using cool colors for the background, warm colors in the foreground and getting my values to match those on my Value Study.
When those dried, I added a little more value to my darker tones.
And a little more… (again making sure to let everything dry completely between layers)
In the end I added a few details to create the final painting.
Over all, I’m liking this painting. It’s a little overworked (I wish the end result had more white of the paper showing through and looked a little less stiff), but for someone who’s been painting with opaque paints for years, I’d say this is a step in the right direction! I’m excited to try again next week.

Beautiful, you are truly a master of the scekth painting. Sadly my scekthes tend to take me just as long as my larger ones! Thanks for checking out my blog; I’m quite flattered. I hope I can find time to take a class with you sometime in the near future.
