Our third assignment in watercolor class was to practice developing form. And easy way to get your feet wet is to paint some fruit, since they’re pretty basic forms themselves.
So, for our assignment we had to do at least 3 practice pages of a single fruit and then do a whole painting of them. Here’s my first practice page!
After sketching the basic shape of the apple with pencil, I put in my first glaze to begin defining the form. My teach says to get the richest colors you should glaze with yellow, then blue, then red. You can of course go in and add more after that and adjust- but I do definitely see that if I begin with yellow my colors turn out a little more rich.
Next comes my blue glaze (be sure to allow each glaze to dry completely before starting the new one. I have a couple of paintings going at the same time so I can do a glaze, and let it dry as I work on another painting)
And then the red glaze
Here I added a second glaze of red to give the apple a little more of a round feel.
The I added some more details, defining the shadow and softening the highlights.
And last of all I added a little more shading and definition to get the final painting.
