I’ve been having so much fun making our Harry the Horse pattern into hot pink zebras! I mean, how could you not smile after making one of these? I have to admit, I’m especially in love with the blinged up version. I mean, how have I not made a toy with rhinestone buttons before now?
The variations are pretty easy to make, I just thought I’d share the changes I made so you can convert your own Harry the Horse into Zeny the Zebra!
So, first the Blinged up Zebra. I used a heavier, upholstery weight zebra print for the body (not really necessary, but it does make it look a little fancier) and a shiny pink satin like fabric for the pint accents. And of course, big rhinestone buttons for the legs and tail were a must! The only trick was her hair. Instead of doing wool felt for the mane and tail, as directed in the pattern, I used a bright pink feather boa. I sewed her up without any hair (see below) and then hand sewed the boa in place on her head (I think I used boa double on the head) and tail (cut the boa twice as long as you need and sew the middle of that piece where the tail is attached).
This option is definitely for older girls!
For younger girls, we’ve got this zebra.
Her hair is created with a fuzzy pink trim that I found at a local quilt shop (I later found some at JoAnn Fabrics that looks almost the same). I cut 3 pieces of the trim to the length of the hair piece in the pattern. I sewed them into the neck the same way I would have sewn in the wool felt. The tail is just a long piece of trim folded in half and sewn onto the horse at the fold.
This gal was sewn up without any buttons so she’d be a little safer around little kids. (to see that tutorial, click here)
