Designing In Microsoft Word

January 17, 2013

Lately I’ve been posting printables that can be customized in Word.  The new version of Word makes adding words to images a pretty easy process.  I thought I’d show you how it’s done!

Right now our most popular printable is our Custom Baptism Printable, so I thought I’d show you how I added custom words to that one.

WordImageTutorial1

Start with a blank Word document.  Save the image you’d like to use to your computer as a jpeg.

Go to the ‘Insert’ tab, click on the Picture icon and choose ‘Insert a Picture from a File’.  Find your file saved to your computer and click on Insert.

Your image will now be in your document!  You can click on it, and then center it like text from the ‘Home’ tab.

To add the name on top of this printable we’ll insert a text box.  Go back to the ‘Insert’ tab, click on the Text Box icon and choose ‘Draw Text Box’. Click and drag the text box to fit right above your image.  Type in the name you want on your printable.

By default, the text box has a white background and black outline.  We want the text to look like it goes with the image, so we’re going to change that by clicking on the outside of the text box (so the whole box is selected, not just the text) and going to the ‘Drawing Tools/Format’ tab.  Click on ‘Shape Fill’ and select ‘No Fill’.  Then Click on ‘Shape Outline’ and select ‘No Outline’.

Now that your text box is looking great, let’s adjust that text.  Go back to your ‘Home’ tab.  With the text highlighted, adjust font, size and color so your words match the size and color of your image.  You might need to click and drag the outside of the box to fit it to your new text.

WordImageTutorial6Repeat the process again to insert another text box below your document to add a custom date to your image.  Once the date is in, you’re done!  Save your document as normal, print and enjoy!

This is great, but what text did you use so I can match it?
